Nothing beats a fresh, clean-smelling home on a hot summer day. Whether I am
diffusing in the air, passive diffusing, or cleaning the house, I love to implement my favorite
essential oils to achieve an invigorating scent. It is important for our minds and our bodies to
have an atmosphere to relax and unwind in. We also need atmospheres set to keep us
motivated and get things done. If you are like me on a hot summer day, you just want to stay
cool and enjoy your fresh glass of iced tea. This blend I am going to share with you is called
“Home Sweet Home”. You can use it in your diffuser (3 drops per 100ml of water), or drop it
onto a cotton pad and use clothespins to clip onto fans, vents, or closet shelves.
Have you ever walked into a room and the smell floods your mind with childhood
memories? I love it when that happens to me. One good inhale and my olfactory system kicks it
into overdrive. I can be taken back to my favorite scent as a child, or my teenage years, and
sometimes it goes back to when I was a little girl playing outside in the yard. I would help my
mom hang up the sheets on the clothesline. The scent of the fresh laundry hanging on the lines
would carry throughout the morning air. Now, I love to bring that scent into my home with a
fresh linen spray called “Summertime Laundry.” You can add this into a 2 ounce bottle with 1
ounce of 190 proof Everclear along with 1 ounce of distilled water. Add the essential oil blend
into the Everclear, let it sit for about 30 minutes, then add your water. Shake well. You can use
this on curtains, bedspreads, and even just a fresh spritz in the air.
Your bathroom smells like a fresh field of lavender with a sweet touch of vanilla and
lemon. This is what you want people to say when they walk into your bathroom. You would
hate for someone to walk in and snub their nose at the smell. Store bought candles, plug-ins,
and wax melts can be full of chemicals that can actually cause harm to our bodies. My favorite
way to freshen up my bathroom is with a bowl of pinecones. You heard me right! Pinecones
that are probably lurking about in your backyard right now just begging for you to put them to
good use. Here is my favorite “PooPourri.”
When using essential oils regularly, you will want to keep them rotated. The reason is
that becoming sensitized to the scent and it actually causing more harm than good. Over
time, using the same scent can give you headaches, cause nausea, and you can become highly
sensitive to the scent you have been using. I recommend switching them out every other week.
I like to make what is called a master blend. Pick your favorite oils and add them to a 5 or 10 ml
bottle. This way, you can use them in your diffuser, on cotton pads, or make your own rollers or
body butters. You can also add them to castile soap and then into the bath.
Safety is always my main concern when using essential oils. If you are pregnant, nursing,
have small children, animals, or are taking medications, always check with a certified
aromatherapist before using essential oils in the air or on your body. If you are using a diffuser
make sure you diffuse in intervals. 30 minutes-1 hour on, then 1 hour off. If you are using
cotton pads this isn’t an issue; you can just keep adding a few drops, or if you want to change
the scent up switch out cotton pads. Remember to switch up the scents every 2 weeks so your
nose and body don’t become oversensitive and let them enjoy fresh air every now and then.
